Nature Wonders VICTORIA FALLS Zimbabwe

NWG-DVD-173 - Located in the south of the African continent and located on the Zambia/Zimbabwe border, the Victoria Falls are one of the world's most amazing and impressive wonders of nature. Between February and March when the Zambesi is at its strongest, an average of more than five hundred million litres of water shoot over edge of the waterfall every minute. Indeed, the dimensions of the Victoria Falls beats all records: at an average height of ninety seven metres, the Victoria Falls are around one and a half times as long and also twice as high as the world famous Niagara Falls in North America.

Nature Wonders ARCHES USA

NWG-DVD-130 - Arches is an area in the US state of Utah that is one of the most famous national parks in North America and owes its fame to its fantastic sandstone arches. In spite of its comparatively modest size of three hundred square kilometres it boasts one of the most magnificent landscapes in the south west of the United States. The park's natural arches have become its unmistakable landmark and the impressive process of erosion that began in Prehistoric times demonstrates how even the hardest rock can be manipulated by the forces of nature. Landscape Arch is one of the park's most striking formations. With a span of around a hundred metres it is one of the largest of its kind in the world.

Nature Wonders MONO LAKE USA

NWG-DVD-127 - Mono Lake is the greatest crater lake in the world and although it is one of the oldest lakes in North America and its water is three times as salty as the sea, it is far from dead. Mysteriously and full of bizarre formations, white tuff rocks rise out of the water. Their origin is a remarkable natural wonder. The combination of both lake water and natural springs creates a white limestone sediment of calcium carbonate that is the main constituent of the tuff stones. Both the Bodie Hills close to the northern part of the lake and the eastern Anchorite Hills are millions of years old volcanic mountains with enchanting rock formations. Sometimes it seems as though the rock possesses a mysterious, inner power. In the summer months fifty thousand seagulls around the

Nature Parks MESA VERDE Colorado

NPM-DVD-127 - The Mesa Verde National Park is located sixty kilometres from the small town of Durango in the US State of Colorado. Various spectacular vantage points are located along the park's winding road, such as that of Park Point which at 2613 metres above sea level is the highest section of the park and makes the panoramic view across the extensive desert foothills of the Rocky Mountains seems almost endless. Unlike most national parks in North America, and despite the magnificent rock and stone formations of the region, the observation of Nature is not the main reason that most people visit the park as the Mesa Verde is where the origins of an advanced North American civilization are to be found. The oldest traces of this region's human habitation date back almost twelve thousand years when for several centuries the Native Indians lived on top of the high plateau. At that time, the Indians possessed no building skills thus the Anasazi Indians lived within large, natural caves. Created and inhabited by the Anasazi, the impressive cliff dwellings of Spruce Tree House were most likely established in the 12th century. Steep cliffs still show traces of climbing and the ancient paths of the Anasazi and ceremonial buildings such as the Sun Temple were most likely the result of amicable communication between the neighbouring villagers of the canyons. Square Tower House at Navajo Canyon was probably built between 1200 and 1300 AD during the latter period of the Anasazi ...

Nature Parks BADLANDS South Dakota

NPM-DVD-147 - In the south west of the state of South Dakota is a mysterious-looking landscape that is rugged, sparse and a surreal-looking desert of rock that is colourfully known as the Badlands. For around five hundred thousand years the forces of wind, air and water have gradually shaped the mighty rocks that appear like huge walls across the Badlands. In some places the rock walls look like miniature mountains and everywhere one looks there are fascinating rock formations. In addition it is the many colours contained within the rock that also focus the attention. Conversely, the Badlands Prairie features a large variety of grasses that are only to be found in this region of North America. Between the scattered rocks are a total of fifty six varieties of grass that combine to form an ecological system that is unique in the world. Paleotologists also benefit from the weather beaten terrain of South Dakota as the south west region also features several fossil excavation sites. Remains of the original ancestors of the horse, the Mesohippus, have been discovered in the Badlands as well as the petrified bones of carnivores such as the Creodonten and various now-extinct turtles. Badlands may be its name but in no way does it describe the unspoiled magnificence of its truly unique and spectacular scenery.

Nature Parks ROCKY MOUNTAINS Colorado

NPM-DVD-143 - The Rocky Mountains National Park is one of the most unique and impressive natural paradises in the United States Of America. It covers an area of a thousand square kilometres and was inaugurated in 1915. The picturesque Bear Lake lies within a forested area and is one of the most popular tourist destinations of the park. At high altitude, several paths such as the Nature Trail lead through the lake's natural landscape. The idyllic beauty is truly spellbinding and it is not surprising that Bear Lake is the most popular photo shot of the entire park. It was discovered that twelve thousand years ago prehistoric Indians hunted within the Rocky Mountains. The legendary culture of the Nasazi Indians originated around two thousand years ago and left its traces in what is today the national park. Alberta Falls in the south of Glacier Gorge is one of the park's most popular sightseeing destinations where white masses of foaming water race down several levels into the valley below. The road from Glacier Gorge winds its way in a northerly direction past Glacier Basin and the eastern park entrance close to Estes Park. In this region the Rocky Mountains are at their most beautiful and the landscape in the area of Horseshoe Park is reminiscent of the exciting and colourful Wild West of old. The vast wilderness in the west of the USA has survived in the Rocky Mountains right up to the present day and is a fascinating tribute to the amazing natural world of North America.

Nature Parks YOSEMITE PARK California

NPM-DVD-139 - Majestic, thousand metre high rock walls flank a magnificent valley, the heart of the world famous Yosemite National Park located in California's Sierra Nevada. The first thing that strikes most visitors to the park is its spectacular waterfalls which. are the highest on the entire North American Continent and plunge down more than seven hundred metres. At Yosemite Falls the water from Yosemite Creek falls from the elevated regions of the Sierra Nevada down into the valley below. For several centuries, long before any white settlers reached the valleys of today's park, the area that surrounded the Merced River was the sole domain of the Native American Indian. For almost four thousand years this was the hunting ground of the Awanitshi Indians. In bygone times the Indians called today's Bridal Veil Fall, 'Pohono', The Spirit of the Wind. The name is most apt because the water is continuously forced away from the rock walls and the height of the waterfall is equivalent to around sixty-two storeys. In the northern more inaccessible sections of the park the cold and clear water of the streams flows into the Tuolmne River. The source of the water that travels into the Merced River is a combination of several creeks that are located in the three thousand metre high alpine regions of both the Cathedral and Clarke Mountain Ranges. The park's prehistoric Mammoth Trees are truly gigantic and their trunks can reach a diameter of nearly ten metres and a height of up to ...

Nature Wonders GREAT SALT LAKE USA

NWG-DVD-185 - Framed by the picturesque Wasatch and Uninta Mountains is one of the most unique lakes in the world, the Great Salt Lake in North America, that is located north west of Salt Lake City. The water has a high salt content and few creatures are able to survive within its waters. However, numerous rare species of water fowl can be found along its banks. Salt water shrimp and brine shrimp are the staple diet of the birdlife that inhabits the Great Salt Lake and it is only in the tributaries of the lake that fish are to be found. Due to the loss of its natural outflows the Great Salt Lake lost its water by evaporation thus creating its saltiness. The lake's four tributaries carried various minerals from the surrounding mountains into the lake and its salt content further increased.

Coral Reef Fort Lauderdale by the Sea

The reef at Fort Lauderdale by-the-Sea is one of the best "access from shore" reefs in North America. It is in a high energy beach location but offers good viz when the waves are calm.

Nature Wonders BLACK CANYON OF THE GUNNISON

NWG-DVD-190 - In the west of Colorado there is a mighty crevice in the earth's surface, the Black Canyon Of The Gunnison. For the primeval inhabitants of North America this dark rock landscape must have seemed to be a magical place and was probably something they did their best to avoid but today it is a popular tourist attraction. In some sections the canyon is up to nine hundred metres deep. The rock walls can be read like a geological history book and the single layers indicate the early chapters of earth's creation.
