Nature Wonders HA LONG BAY Vietnam

NWG-DVD-162 - South of the Vietnamese capital of Hano in the Gulf Of Tongking there is a large bay with more than sixteen hundred islands, the Bay Of Ha Long. The rich vegetation that covers the rocks acts as both a shelter and a home for a great variety of wildlife including forty species of bird and eight varieties of reptile. The strangely formed islands attract biologists from all over the world and their is also worth a mention. The latest Stone Age discoveries date back more than eight thousand years and it is believed that the region was inhabited around twenty five thousand years ago. The region's bizarrely formed rocks fired the imagination of those who lived here in ancient times and several of the islands have colourful names most of which were inspired by the animal kingdom such as Camel Island and Turtle Island plus the historic "Driftwood Grotto". The fifteen hundred square kilometres of the Bay Of Ha Long are one of the most impressive locations in the whole of South East Asia, a place of total beauty and one of the world's great natural wonders

Nature Parks CANYON DE CHELLY Arizona

npm-dvd-136 - There are few places in the USA that, like the Canyon De Chelly, are both a national monument of Indian culture and at the same time contain a magnificent rocky landscape that attracts the serious as well as the most casual lover of Nature. The nature reservation's rocky terrain is formed by two long arms of land that consist of the southern Canyon De Chelly and the northern Canyon Del Muerto. This rocky landscape is located in the northeast of Arizona and in the middle of Dinétah´s heart, ancient Navajo Indian territory that today contains their reservation. Since the beginning of the 11th century, during the most important time of their culture, the Anasazi Indians built dwellings in numerous locations of the river valley. One of the most popular and historic rock settlements and archaeological areas of the Canyon is the White House, thus named due to its stark, bright appearance. These buildings are remarkable architectural examples that date back to the historical epoch of the Pueblo Tribe, between the 12th and 14th centuries. An array of smooth, eroded sandstone walls decorate each of the reservation's valleys. However, although less frequent, more spectacular are the free standing rocky peaks such as Spider Rock. Such impressive moments reveal the magnificent beauty of the Canyon De Chelly, the sacred territory of the Navajo Indians and in the bright, burning glow of sunset, both sky and earth become as one.

Tacoma Narrows Bridge Collapse "Gallopin' Gertie"

Watch the amazing "Gallopin' Gertie" November 7, 1940 film clip. 1940 Tacoma Narrows Bridge Slender, elegant and graceful, the Tacoma Narrows Bridge stretched like a steel ribbon across Puget Sound in 1940. The third longest suspension span in the world opened on July 1st. Only four months later, the great span's short life ended in disaster. "Galloping Gertie," collapsed in a windstorm on November 7,1940. The bridge became famous as "the most dramatic failure in bridge engineering history." Now, it's also "one of the world's largest man-made reefs." The sunken remains of Galloping Gertie were placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992 to protect her from salvagers. A dramatic tale of failure and success The story of the failure of the 1940 Narrows Bridge and the success of the Current Narrows Bridge is a great American saga. When Galloping Gertie splashed into Puget Sound, it created ripple effects across the nation and around the world. The event changed forever how engineers design suspension bridges. Gertie's failure led to the safer suspension spans we use today.

Nature Parks EVERGLADES Florida

NPM-DVD-105 - Nature Parks EVERGLADES Florida The Everglades Nature Park is located in the far South East of Florida and covers an area of around 3500 square kilometres. Beyond the protection of the park, the neighbouring swamps are a major fascination of this region. The textures of the landscape are both rugged and soft and its infinite waterways and riverbanks conjure up a strong sense of adventure. There are alligators, racoons, pelicans, heron, ibis, and two hundred and seventy-five species of fish including the manatis - a docile sea cow that weighs well over a ton - as well as more than four hundred species of bird. There's a replica of an original Miccosukee Indian village that has been transformed into an historical museum and the tiny settlement also contains a variety of well-stocked shops with an array of traditionally crafted Indian products. An unusual vehicle that seems to be related to a tractor, but a more elevated version, is an ideal way to journey through the thick mud of the swamp, passing racoons and even alligators along the way. Numerous legends surround these mysterious, natural swamps, and some of the faces of its natural inhabitants - alligators, racoons and birdlife - reflect the stories and history of this unique, highly atmospheric and fascinating nature park.
